The QPIX process happens in 3 stages, with some overlap. We will call this first stage Act 1.

ACT 1 – SCRIPT CALL & DEVELOPMENT

NOTE: The process mapped below for dramas is similar to that for documentary, though in that case, more attention is payed at the outset to identifying the story within the piece.

1.1           In around September or October every year QPIX puts out the call for short dramas, documentaries, and transmedia projects.

1.2           We then bring in a team of industry professionals as readers to work with the QPIX Team. From this a long short list is selected.

1.3           QPIX offers this list development towards production, with no guarantees. QPIX then formally Options those scripts for development. The scripts then belong to QPIX until either the script is dropped from the production round (in which case the rights revert to the writer) or the script is produced (in which case, on full delivery to Contract, the Producer is issued the rights over the script along with full copyright over the film.

1.4           A professional Script Editor then works with the writers through up to 3 drafts of the script. This is done in a mix of email correspondence and face-to-face meetings. At times, Skype conferencing is also used.

The writer puts some alternatives to the Script Editor…

1.5          The Supervising Producer and the Executive Producer get involved at this point, reading and providing development notes to the Script Editor.

The Executive Producer takes an interest, and makes some suggestions…

1.6           At this point the readers read the latest drafts and a final selection is made of that number of scripts that have been targeted for production in that year. The writers of those that are dropped have received some free development experience, and the rights over the script revert back to them.

1.7           Also at this point the selected scripts are released to those producers and directors who have expressed interest in working on the Slate for that year.

The Script Editor indulges in some wishful thinking…

1.8           The selected scripts then undergo further development for up to 3 more drafts. The producer and writer who will be on by this time are also contributing to the process by this time.
