The QPIX SCREEN INDUSTRY ACADEMY (QSIA) offers a Diploma of Screen & Media with a focus on training directors. We dedicate this course to DAVID FINCHER, one of the most imaginative and successful directors working today.

The course will be delivered as 15 Units delivered over 36 weeks Attendance will be Monday, Tuesday– 10am to 5pm, Wednesday – 10am to 4pm, plus allowance for additional or alternative hours for involvement in productions when necessary.

As with all QSIA training, production is the key. Details of the production slate for this course remain to be finalised but will consist of a minimum of:

• A set of ultra-short dramas designed for multiple platforms
• A set of longer-duration shorts with mixed transmedia components.

It is vital QPIX run a course like this that concentrates on direct, focused training of directors, the critical and very troubling gap in professional development in the contemporary screen industry in this country. There are arguably even fewer working directors in this country than writers.

Though the problem is largely due to the very small Australian production base in television outside of Sydney, it is also the case that the emphasis in early-career training of directors has always tended to be on native talent rather then on actual training in production, planning, communications, people management and so on. The intensive training in all aspects of directing in THE DIRECTOR’S PROJECT will help shift the balance.

In order to keep the students in touch with reality, some of the course Units will also cover certain key aspects of producing, and all will be required to fill this role at least once during the course on the productions of their fellow students. Good directing requires a working knowledge of all aspects of filmmaking, including producing.
